Lighting systems include various lamps used in greenhouses to trigger the photosynthesis process of plants. However, not all lamps have the same ability to emit the wavelengths the plant needs. LED and High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps are generally preferred in plant cultivation. There are many factors to consider when choosing these lamps, because lighting plays a very important role in greenhouse cultivation.

High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps are classified as high intensity discharge lamps and are considered a highly efficient light source. They can emit yellow light in the 1900K-2200K range and their luminous efficiency can be up to 140 lm/W. However, the color rendering index (CRI) of HPS lamps is generally low, usually around 20-30. These lamps have a lifespan of about 20,000 hours, which means about 5.5 years with 10 hours of daily use and about 7 years with 8 hours of daily use. HPS lamps are often preferred due to their high efficiency, small size and long lifetime.

Light is particularly critical during the flowering period of plants. When planning plant lighting in greenhouses, it is important to consider the light diffusion area, the length of the day, the quantity and quality of light. For plants grown under controlled conditions, the right lighting can directly affect crop yields.

LED lighting lamps offer a number of advantages for plant cultivation. In particular, LED lighting fixtures can be optimized to provide any desired color ratio. By using different materials, semiconductors can be created and different color filters can be used in the casing around the semiconductor. By changing the materials used in these filters and semiconductors, almost any color of light can be produced, including infrared and ultraviolet.

Due to its low energy consumption, LED technology is replacing traditional lighting systems in agriculture as in many other lighting areas. Lower energy consumption makes the investment cost of new projects more attractive. Greenhouse lighting systems ensure that ideal conditions are constantly maintained in greenhouses, thus having a positive impact on plant productivity and quality.
